DMT 10-Inch Dia-Flat Lapping Plate, 120 Micron/120 Mesh (120 grit)

Yes, this is sort of like an extra-large and extra-heavy-duty version of the well-known D8XX Extra-Extra-Coarse stone. It's a monster!

DMT recommends the 95 micron (160 mesh) version (which we do not carry at this time) for flattening 1000 and finer grit stones, or this 120 micron (120 mesh) for 1000 grit and coarser stones. Yes, you can still use this on finer stones but it will leave them more scratched than a finer lapping plate will... this isn't always a problem, but if you want a highly polished edge (or you're sharpening a straight razor for example), it's probably not ideal. For kitchen knives this one should be fine though, and will last a bit longer and cut faster than the 95 micron version.

DMT offers the Dia-Flat in two versions, a 120 micron / 120 mesh and a 95 micron / 160 mesh. Each lapping plate is made with the same Diamond Hardcoat Technology™ and precision ground, hand certified flat to +/- 0.0005". The 95 micron / 160 mesh is less coarse than the original 120 micron version.

NOTE: The surface of these stones may appear scratched and there may be small indents/pits in the surface, but it's just a by-product of their manufacturing and does not affect performance.

Must have for lapping stones.

I initially bought the 8" coarse DMT but found it not being coarse enough. Then I bought the 8" XX coarse and found it perfect for my needs. Used it for 9 years and still enough diamonds left for lapping. Unfortunately I find that the 8" is slightly shorter than the Shapton stones I have been lapping. It's mostly fine but for faster dishing stones it's just not big enough.

This is when I bought the 10" DMT lapping plate. It's expensive for sure but I think it's worth it. Buy good, buy once. Don't make the mistake of buying cheaper plates and ending up buying the expensive option anyway. Though using my 8" XX coarse for 9 years I got full value out of it. I can speak for the longevity of DMT plates too.

Don't worry about the XX coarse. I would buy an even more coarse plate if I could. You really want faster cutting speed for lapping. I work as a professional chef and sharpen tons of knives daily. I don't have time to lap my stones. XX coarse isn't even that coarse and the diamond plate will wear down overtime to a point where you lap almost perfectly smooth anyway. The coarser plates last much longer.
